Topic:  GC Troubleshooting – Origin of Ghost Peaks

Presenter:  Jaap de Zeeuw

Summary:  In GC, sometimes a peak unexpectedly appears, called a “ghost peak”.  There are a number of sources that can generate extra peaks.  Your sample can get polluted, components can be generated in the injection port, gas lines can get contaminated, stationary phase can generate unwanted peaks, and analytes can break down.  This webinar will discuss the different sources for ghost peaks and how to reduce the formation or eliminate completely.

Topic:  GC Analysis of Water as Component or Components having water as matrix

Presenter:  Jaap de Zeeuw

Summary:  Water is considered a difficult component to analyze.  Many think water should not be injected into a GC capillary column; that is a myth.  Water as component or matrix will elute at relative low temperatures, meaning it will do little harm with bonded stationary phases.  Water in the carrier gas, or introduced as a leak, is a bigger problem as the column is hot and the phase/surface will hydolize and create active sites.  Water as component can be done on several stationary phases, polar and non-polar.  The biggest challenge is to get a reproducible injection.  Water as matrix  is more challenging.  There are several ways to isolate the components from the matrix.  It is also possible to inject water, however, one needs to be careful for back flash.  Also, adding co-solvents can help to smoothen the injection band.  In this webinar, different options for measuring water and analysis of analytes in a water matrix will be discussed.

Topic:  EZGC Modeling Tools – A GC in your laptop

Presenter:  Jaap de Zeeuw

Summary:  Free EZGC web-based-tools are available to accelerate Gas Chromatography (GC) method development by direct simulation of the chromatographic process.  There is a method translation that allows you to translate the oven temperature program of existing methods, so you get exact peak elution order (same chromatogram).  It allows you to optimize any existing method, reduce analysis time using flow, and a different carrier gas or a shorter/smaller ID column dimension.  The second option is using ProEZGC, which is basically a GC in your laptop.  The user is able to directly control every parameter of the chromatography for your components of interest being modeled.  This includes type carrier gas, flow conditions, stationary phase type, column dimensions, and temperature program.  These GC modeling features allow users to develop new applications or improve existing applications, as well as visualize the impact of changing conditions, without purchasing a GC column or finding an available gas chromatograph to do the testing.

Topic:  Sampling Airborne VOCs with radiello Passive Samplers

Presenter:  Jason Herrington

Summary:  The passive sampling of indoor, outdoor, and personal air VOCs with diffusive, axial-type, badges is a well-established technique for fence-line, environmental, and industrial hygiene/occupational health applications.  However, radial-type samplers like the radiello offer several unique advantages over axial-type devices.  This webinar will introduce what radiello is, how it works, how to use it, and what are some of its advantages.
